Despicable Me 2 A Personal Favorite of Mrs. Mark Brewer

It was a weekend and the Mark Brewer Mansion was for once not crowded with a lot of friends. There was not much to do, so Mrs. Mark Brewer and me decided to spend the evening outside. We planned to watch a movie and then have dinner at Royal Oak. There were some movies to choose from, but I wanted badly to watch Despicable Me 2. I was very impressed with the first part and loved the hilarious Mr. Gru. Despicable Me 2 was the first sequel released by Illumination Entertainment.

What was so impressive about Despicable Me was: it released nearly side by side with a popular animation movie i.e. Megamind, and yet held its own. Both these movies had a super villain as their main character. Though Megamind was more scheming, Gru is more of a sentimental person. Though there were many resemblances with Megamind, yet Despicable Me felt like a lease of fresh air. The same cannot be opined about the second installment. At times, the story seems to be without any purpose.

In the first part, Gru was endeavoring to be a super villain like none other. But the little girls (Margo, Edith and Agnes) reformed him. As the caption for the movie suggests “When the World needed a Hero, they called a Villain”, Gru is contacted by the Anti-Villain League (AVL) to track down a certain chemical that is converting people and items into killing machines. Initially, Gru refuses to collaborate with AVL agent Lucy but later decides to help. Gru is given the duty at a Shopping Mall. Why did the director think of a shopping mall of all the places is a question I kept pondering over? The movie rolls on as the relationship between Lucy and Gru intensifies and the later feels he has fallen in love.

Steve Carell who lends the voice of Gru does a great job as in the first part. Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove and Russell Brand also do their jobs admirably. What makes Despicable Me 2 a not-quite-there movie are major loopholes in the storyline. Unlike the first movie the story is not concrete; it often meanders here and there. Though there are flashes of hilarious laughter, but a lot of expectations went unfulfilled.

A good movie, if it is not compared with its predecessor. Mrs. Mark Brewer liked the movie and we had a sumptuous dinner following the movie. Next day, I even shared some jokes from the movie with my friend Mr. Phoenix.
